Haflinger Shoe Size Guide: Converting EU to US Sizes

So you've found the perfect pair of Haflinger slippers — cozy wool felt, a supportive cork footbed, that unmistakable European craftsmanship — and now you're staring at a size like "EU 40" wondering what that actually means for your feet. You're not alone. Since Haflinger is a European brand made in Germany, all of our shoes are sized using the EU (Continental) system, which can feel unfamiliar if you're used to shopping in US sizes.

The good news: converting between the two is simple once you know the numbers. Here's everything you need to find your perfect Haflinger fit.

Why EU and US Sizes Don't Match Up

EU and US sizing systems are built on different measurement scales, so a US size 9 and an EU size 40 aren't just "renamed" versions of each other — they're calculated differently. That's why you can't simply subtract or add a fixed number and expect it to work perfectly across every brand. For Haflinger specifically, we recommend using the chart below, which we've calculated for our own lasts and fits.

EU to US Size Conversion Chart

Women's Sizes

EU Size US Size (Women) Foot Length (cm)
36 5 22.9
37 6 23.5
38 7 24.0
39 8 24.6
40 9 25.3
41 10 25.9
42 11 26.5

Men's Sizes

EU Size US Size (Men) Foot Length (cm)
40 7 25.3
41 8 25.9
42 9 26.5
43 10 27.1
44 11 27.8
45 12 28.4
46 13 29.0

Foot length is measured from heel to the tip of the longest toe. These are standard European (Paris point) reference values — always compare against your own measurement rather than the size you normally wear in other brands. Many Haflinger styles are unisex and run on the same EU scale, so check the product page for both the women's and men's US equivalent before you order.

How to Find Your Exact Size

Charts are a great starting point, but your own foot measurement is the most reliable way to get a perfect fit. Here's how to measure at home:

  1. Stand on a piece of paper with your heel against a wall, wearing the socks you'll typically wear with your slippers.
  2. Mark the tip of your longest toe on the paper.
  3. Measure the distance from the wall to your mark in centimeters.
  4. Repeat for both feet — most people have one foot slightly larger than the other, so always size for the bigger one.
  5. Compare your measurement in centimeters to the "Foot Length" column in the chart above to find your EU size, then read across to your US size. For the most precise fit, our full size chart also lists exact measurements per style.

A Few Fit Tips Specific to Haflinger

  • Wool has a little give. Our boiled wool and wool felt styles will mold to your foot slightly over the first few wears, so if you're between two sizes, most customers find sizing down gives the snugger, more supportive fit.
  • Half sizes aren't always available. If your measurement falls between two EU sizes, we generally recommend sizing up for extra room, especially if you'll be wearing thicker socks.
  • Fit isn't just length. Haflinger's anatomically shaped cork or latex footbeds are designed to support your natural foot shape, so pay attention to width and arch comfort, not just toe-to-heel length.
  • Returns are free. Not sure you nailed it? You can return any Haflinger shoe to us free of charge, so there's no risk in trying your first size and adjusting if needed.
